Purpose: The following information has been compiled to give you a briefview of our club and its purpose, and to provide a general viewof our classes ,to include the objectives and course outline. We, the members of the Marumsco dog Training Club Inc.,are quite proud of our club and the training classes we sponsor. We hope the information provided will assist you in answering some questions you might have about the club and the classes we offer.
History of Marumsco Dog Training Club Inc. The club was formed in July 1973. At that time ,the primary aim was to get together a number of individuals who were training dogs and entering then in obediance trials. In the time since then, the club has grown in size and now sponsors training classes (basic and novice),demonstrations for local organizations and schools, annual fun matches, and various social events for members. New memberships are welcomed and encouraged. For more information on membership requirements , feel free to talk to any club member.
Class Objectives If the purpose of our beginning classes could be reduced to one phrase, it would be "to train you to train your dog". A dog that has been trained becomes a better companion, more able and willing to fit in as a member of your family. An untrained dog can be a burden and cause problems, in many cases resulting in the family getting rid of the dog. Therefor, our first objective is to train you to train your dog. To do this , we provide instruction in basic dog obediance and provide information to better enable you to handle the many problems encountered in owning a dog. The second objective is to assist you in applying the methods learned by you and your dog. In our advanced classes , we teach ring procedures for entering obediance trials , refine and further emphasize the basic instruction, and provide more advanced theory and instruction in training dogs. Our third objective is to create in you an interest in continuing training your dog and possibly in entering the world of competitive obediance.
Class Coverage The following exercises are taught in the beginning classes. The exercise and a brief explanation of the purpose of each is also provided. HEELING: To train your dog to walk at your left side, on a loose lead, and at your pace, not his. It is a pleasant experience to take your dog for a walk and not have him drag you down the street.
SIT AND DOWN: To train your dog to sit and lie down on command. To train him to remain in one of these positions for a reasonable amount of time with distractions. The main benefits are that you can tell the dog to sit or lie down on one command and leave him in that position without him running off.
STAND: To train your dog to stand and have a stranger come up to him and "inspect" him. This gets your dog used to strangers approaching him without showing signs of fear or aggression and can greatly assist in visits to the veterinarian.
RECALL: To train your dog to come to you on one command, and sit in front of you. Anyone who has chases their dog around the block or watches as he disappeared over the horizon knows the value of being able to call your dog on one command and have him respond every time.
We offer a Basic and a Advanced Obediance Class..We also offer from time to time Handling Classes.
